Constructive criticism is a very important part of learning. In the writing class I teach, ENG 101, students are required to engage in peer reviews. I like to use this as an opportunity to showcase to students the power of feedback. When giving students feedback on their own feedback, they are able to understand what to look for in the other feedback I give them.

I encourage students to create complete peer reviews and also assess the value of the feedback they get. I like to emphasize that all feedback does not need to be incorporated. The writer should have the most control in deciding what to change or not change in a piece of writing.
